Roman Family Life

A Roman family was ran by the father and his authority was complete. No one could question it. The most wanted children were strong baby boys. The father could leave it out to die or keep it. At the age of seven to eleven, poor children would work but would try to go to school. Girls were allowed to be married at 12 years old but 14 was the common age. Boys became adults at 14 and entered the military or politics. Men could easily divorce their wives, but the wives had a hard time divorcing the men. the father could be cruel or loving but no one could question him.

The Ten Plagues

Moses and Aaron showed signs to the Pharaoh, but the Pharaoh doesn’t let the Hebrews go. So, God sent the first plague and turned the Nile River to blood. The second plague was frogs. Frogs came up out of the Nile and infested the land. The magicians could make more frogs but only Moses could make them leave. The third plague was lice, all dust turns into lice and infests man and the beast. The magicians cannot mimic this plague. The fourth plague were flies. The Pharaoh bargains with God but as soon as the plague is removed, the Pharaoh stonewalls. The fifth plague was death of livestock and cattle. This utterly (cow pun lol) crippled food and transportation. The sixth plague was boils and sores. Moses blew some ashes and they spread throughout the land causing boils and sores. The seventh plague was hailstones which destroyed flax and barley. The eighth plague was locusts which ate all of the crops. The ninth plague is darkness. It was so dark that the darkness could be felt in all of Egypt. Moses and Aaron tried to let their people go but Pharaoh wouldn’t listen, so they had ten plagues

Hannibal And The Second Punic War

After the first Punic War, there was a very short war called the Mercenary War. Carthage won the first Punic War. Small battles broke out in Rome and Carthage, thus began the second Punic War.

Hannibal was born in 247 and was the son of the king of Carthage. He grew up in the Mercenary War. When he was young, he promised his dad that he would never befriend Rome. The Romans made a treaty with Sanctum, so he used this as an excuse to declare war. He conquered Sanctum in eight months. in a short time, there were three wars long and short

The Fall of Israel

The fall of Israel began under the reign of Pekah. He tried to conquer Judah, but the king of Assyria ravaged parts of Israel. Hoshea was the last king, and he was a puppet king. He was forced to pay tribute to Assyria. When he didn’t send the tribute, Shalmanezer sieged Sumaria. After a three-year siege, Assyria took over Israel. All of the Israelites were deported to Assyria and God no longer had their back. Peka was the ruler when Israel fell to Assyria

The Early Greeks

Greece was one of the first civilizations. Most of the population were seafarers. The culture is named Minoans after king Minos. The writing was almost hieroglyphics. One of the most famous myths is of the Minotaur. King Aegeas had a son named Theseus. He wasn’t allowed to live in the palace but later his father let him back in the palace. They had to pay fourteen people to Crete, so he was one of them. He and Ariadne fell in love and she brought him a sword and a ball of yarn. He uses them to kill the Minotaur and Ariadne is forced to marry a Greek god. His father accidently threw himself off a cliff thinking his son had died. Today that part of the ocean is called the Aegen sea.

Solomon

Solomon was the son of David and wasn’t the obvious choice for the throne. David made a co-regent with Solomon before he died. God appeared to Solomon and grants him one wish. Solomon asks for wisdom to rule his people. God granted his request and gave him wealth and power. Two women, each had a son but one of the mother’s son died. Both women fought over the last son. Solomon came up to prove whose mother the child was. He said cut the child in half because he knew mothers well enough to know that the real mother would let the other mother have the child. Solomon finds out who the real mother is and gives her custody over her child. Solomon carries out David’s dream of making a temple for God. The temple took seven years to make. Solomon committed sins such as having excessive wealth. For this, God tells Solomon that his son won’t rule Israel but only a remnant. Solomon wasn’t the obvious choice for the throne but he tried and had many sins.

Jesus Christ

An angel told Mary that she would be Christ’s mother. Joseph was descended from David, so he took Mary to Bethlehem. Jesus was born in Bethlehem and the first people to see him were shepherds who were told to see Jesus. eight days later he was presented in the temple. Some wise men came one year after Jesus’s birth and gave him gifts. After the wise men left, they took a different was home to save Jesus but all boys under the age of two were killed. Mary was told that God would send his son through her, so she protected him at all costs

Plato and Aristotle

Plato and Aristotle had interesting lives. Plato’s teacher was Socrates. Plato was born in Athens and had two brothers and one sister. Plato was well educated and became a follower of Socrates. Plato was a mathematician and taught in the Academy. His teaching revolved around “forms”. Plato wrote Meno which was a dialogue between Socrates and Meno.

Aristotle’s teacher was Plato. Aristotle was born in Stagirus in 384 BC. At 18 years old, he went to Plato’s Academy. After Plato’s death, he went to Asia Minor and became Alexander the Great’s tutor. Aristotle went to Athens to start his own school. He was the last person to know everything to know at his time. Plato and Aristotle’s where among the best philosophers of all time.

Roman Gods

The Roman gods where myths told to children and taught in schools. Rome copied most of the stories from the Greeks. If a mistake was made, they would restart the ceremony to fix it. The Romans would change the names of the Greek God’s to things such as the name of planets. Zeus was Jupiter, Hera was Juno, and Ares was Mars, and so on. The Romans had rituals and festivals. They had over 40 annual festivals for all of Rome. Fathers were expected to carry on the religion. The wives were in charge of the fires of Vesta. Offerings could be a cake to statues. At one point, even the emperors were considered gods. The story of the Roman gods has been passed on from Roman generaions.

Queen Esther

Queen Esther had a challenging life. Hadassah changed her name to Esther. She pleased the king and became queen. Haman was a descendant from King Agag, and he hated Jews. When he saw that Mordecai wasn’t giving him all the respect, he thought was due, he wanted all the Jews killed. Haman made a decree with the king to kill a certain troublemaking people. Mordecai saw the decree and sent Esther a letter. Esther asks King Xerxes to dine with him and he says yes. At the second dinner, Esther asks the king to reverse the plot to wipe out the Jews. King Xerxes is levied and kills Haman and his family. The Jews fight back and win on the appointed day. Esther and the Jews are saved, and we have a feast to remember this time. Queen Esther had a challenging life but still helped people.
